Es también el puente más alto y el más costoso que jamás se haya construído, pero se encuentra en un lugar en el que ningun puente debiera construirse. El Estrecho de Akashi en Japón, es un canal de aguas profundas acosado por tifones, fuertes aguaceros, corrientes traicioneras y para empeorar las cosas, está construído en medio de la zona con mayor cantidad de terremotos. A media construcción el puente se vió impactado con toda la fuerza del terremoto Kobe. Increíblemente, la construcción se retrasó solo un mes.
