Featured Series Nature NATURE: Encountering Sea Monsters
Sunday, July 13, 2008, 5 and 8:00 pm

A fearsome Humboldt squid casts a dramatic silhouette as it crosses a patch of light in this high-definition program, which follows veteran undersea cameraman Bob Cranston as he surveys the world of cephalopods - creatures whose bizarre anatomies are as amazing as their extraordinary powers of communication.

“Encountering Sea Monsters” takes the viewer to the frontiers of discovery with some of the top research scientists in the field. Although the family lines of these invertebrates extend back an incredible 500 million years, much remains unknown: For example, 150 new species have been discovered in the last 10 years alone in the waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Like a pair of homicide detectives, Cranston and Dr. Peter Ward, a paleontologist, follow a trail of broken crab shells in the frigid waters of British Columbia. The evidence leads them to the culprit: a giant Pacific octopus, which reaches out with massive tentacles to become acquainted with her strange visitors.

Cranston enlists the expertise of researcher Julian Finn to learn more about how giant cuttlefish use their colors to communicate visually. Diving off the coast of southwestern Australia, the two carry out an experiment to see how the cuttlefish flash their colors in response to their own mirror image. The fascinating results provide a brief glimpse into the complex dynamics of cuttlefish society.

Featured Series Car of the future NOVA: Car of the Future
July 29th at 8 p.m.

How will the car of the future be powered? Will it run on hydrogen, batteries, ethanol or some as-yet undiscovered technology? Find out as NOVA takes a look at the latest and greatest in the automotive industry. Tom and Ray Magliozzi of NPR’s “Car Talk” fame take viewers on a roller-coaster ride into the world of cars — examining new technologies and ideas about America’s most common form of transportation.

With constantly increasing prices at the pump and a growing concern about the impact of emissions on global warming, there is a keen interest in alternative fuel sources to power our cars. The hydrogen fuel cell has long been the holy grail of zero emissions energy, and countries like Iceland are trying out the technology by transforming their public transportation.

Closer to home, there are attempts to create fuels like “biodiesel” — made of used vegetable oil — or ethanol from corn crops. Will these be our future fuels or just a useful intermediate? Can an all-electric sports car being developed in California change the face of driving for good?
